Giro Tweets of the Week: Box jumps, Biblical rain and a lurking Shark

$

It was the first full week of the Giro d’Italia and it was a strange ol’ race. Some super sprints, some riding in the rain and a shakeup in the GC before they’ve even gotten to a mountain … All ruminated over in the Twittersphere and plucked out for your reading pleasure … It’s the original, it’s the best, it’s TWEETS OF THE WEEK

When the weather gods get poked

It was the second of three time trials in this year’s Giro d’Italia, where Primoz Roglic made a mockery of my podcast prediction of the time trials not making as big a difference as usual because Yates is pretty good at them. Well, not so much …

Super sprints

Contemplate these words from Larry Warbasse: apparently Caleb Ewan ‘can box jump his own height’ Sqwaukadoodledoo …

The gorgeous maglia ciclamino is on the shoulders of Pascal Ackermann from Bora. And he’s wearing it well.

It wasn’t just the Giro that had sprints this week. The Jumbo bees buzzed through 4JDD

It ain’t over till it’s over

With Yates losing so much time in the TT, is the GC over? Has Roglic won? No. It’s not over and Roglic hasn’t won yet. But the GC danger probably isn’t going to come from Yates … Roglic is about to be riding in Shark-infested waters.

When Primoz was a pup

Meanwhile, there’s a Shark that is lurking …

So laid back he misses the start

Bikes change lives

I think anyone reading this column knows the freedom and joy riding a bike can give a person. And how much more for children who might struggle with an ordinary bike to be able to ride on bikes custom built to minimise those challenges and give kids the chance to feel that freedom, that independence, that joy.

And while we’re at it, let’s remind ourselves of the great work done by Qhubeka.

I do wish the UCI commissaires would be consistent with applying the rules. 3km is 3km, no matter who is in the peloton.

Giro Tweets of the Week: Unsung heroes and yet more trash talk

$

We’re looking back at the second week of the 2019 Giro d’Italia and the Twitterstream was bountiful! We have unsung heroes who make good, an Ecuadorian who is guarded by a furious turkey, and a furious Shark … plus so much more, of course. We’re TWEETS OF THE WEEK, Giro-style!

Let’s get in the mood …

Unsung heroes + no plan = win!

There were a few unsung heroes getting some attention last week in the Giro – Dario Cataldo was in a two-man break for 200km on Sunday … and actually won! His first individual Giro stage – and you could see what it meant to him.

Even the tiny dogs were celebrating!

This is the victory that made Midge cry the most this week.

Ilnur Zakarin made his presence known in the race by winning a stage.

Damiano Caruso is the engine of Nibali’s Pain Train™ and he’s been workin’ on the railroad all the live-long day …

His Nibs v Roglic = mindgames

Nibali does get worked up about how other riders ride (remember him throwing a bidon at Chris Froome a few GTs ago?). This time, his nemesis is Primoz Roglic who he thinks just stays on his wheel instead of doing some work in the mountains. However, in this Giro, he’s only thrown the bird at another rider. (I’m going to have to think of a snappy nickname for Roglic …)

How it all began

Possible collusion

When titans talk tactics

Meanwhile, back at Roglic HQ

No willy-waving here!

Richard Carapaz took the favourites by surprise by waiting, watching, taking his chance and not looking back on Saturday’s stage. He rode himself to a stage victory and the maglia rosa.

A bold prediction – but there’s still a ways to go in this Giro!

Brilliant – guarded by a ‘furious turkey’

Giro Tweets of the Week : Carapaz champ, Haga honours, Chavito love and Hansen treats …

$

0

The 2019 Giro d’Italia has now come to a close, so the Twitterstream has been trawled for some pink tweets for the last time this season. We have the new champion and reactions from and about the final podium; we have the feel-good stories of the week with Esteban Chaves and Chad Haga; there’s a possible aftermath of the Lopez Goes Bonkers episode and Adam Hansen shares his vegan treats (not a euphemism). Plus much much more …

The new champion

Richard Carapaz rode a brilliant race, supported so ably by his Movistar team. It can’t be underestimated how much it means to a rider to win a Grand Tour, particularly if he’s the first in his nation’s history to do it.

Sometimes, it’s just that simple

Universally cheered by cycling fans everywhere.

I would find it hard to disagree with any of those.

From the others

His Nibs might not have taken his third Giro title but he certainly raced like he meant it. Next, KOM jersey in Paris? I think he might need to get through Julian Alaphilippe first, but what a ding-dong battle that would be!

From red-hot favourite going into the Giro to just getting onto the podium on the last day, Primoz Roglic has a lot to consider about this year’s Giro – and no doubt the experience will make him that much tougher for the next GT.

But you can’t help but feel for Mikel Landa, who was on the podium overnight and lost it by 8sec on the final day. Will the stars ever align for him to win a GT?

One of my riders of the entire race, Giulio Ciccone, with his maglia azzurra and trophy. Trek-Segafredo can be proud of the Giro they raced this year, including a top 5 final place for Bauke Mollema.

Always a Pedaleur de Charme.

Unapologetic delight for Chavito

While not universal (there’s always one), the solo stage win by Esteban Chaves on Friday was greeted by 99.9% of fans with glee and unabashed love for the Colombian rider. And why not? Always respectful, always with the biggest smile (even King Kelly mentioned ‘he always has such a bright smile on his face’), coming back from adversity, his team keeping the faith … there’s always room to celebrate those feel-good stories in the sport.

He took second in Stage 17, which was just as emotional (if not more) than when he won Stage 19.

But attack attack attack was the name of the game on Friday. And it paid off.

Another constant Pedaleur de Charme

Lopez meltdown … it might not be over

We’ve all seen the footage from Stage 20 a million times now (I’ve counted). Fool is running on the road, gets knocked into the riders, Miguel Angel Lopez goes down, Lopez reacts very badly and strikes out. Funnily enough, I was talking to a friend about this on Sunday evening – the fact that Roglic got a time penalty for not doing enough to make fans stop pushing him on the climb and that Lopez didn’t get any kind of penalty, whether it be DQ, time penalty or a fine, when what he did was clearly against the rules and much more serious. We’ll see how this one plays out but I can’t see why Lopez didn’t get any kind of punishment for that, no matter how justified people thought it might have been.

If you’re not going to sanction him, shouldn’t he then be getting some time back? At least be consistent about something!

Lotto-Soudal corner

So what would a vegan pro cyclist eat on a Grand Tour? Adam Hansen‘s got you covered

A few words from that fresh-faced Tom Wellens

And I’m just going to tack on a little QuickStep news …

Get me the big loofah mitt!

Terrified that the rumours were true about Julian Alaphilippe going to Direct Energie next year, this was a huge sigh of relief for me. Not sure I would have let Lefevre get so familiar but …

The Gruppetto

It was an Ag2r win in the last week … and it was champers all round

Any decent reference to Star Wars (especially when Luke and Han were pups) gets a place in Tweets of the Week.

No, this wasn’t a euphemism

Prepping for the Tour, no doubt

One of the brightest spots of this year’s Giro – Orla’s show on Eurosport. Looking forward to the Tour with her at the helm

And while I hate to admit it, I really liked Bradley Wiggins on the programme, but there were definitely some eye-rolling, pot-kettle-black, how-quickly-they-forget moments, including this one

Tweets of the Week : So much Danishness! So much Tourness! So much tweetness!

We had a sneaky week off last week but we’re back! We’ve got some Dauphine action, a little bit of Swissness, playful Bora Hamsters and much much more. It’s the original and it’s the best – it’s TWEETS OF THE WEEK!

So much Danishness!

Midge has been in the VeloVoices storage units, pulling out the Danish flags for the Dauphine (and I bet she won’t pack them away until the end of the Tour …).

Possibly the craziest tweet ever from Inner Ring! This is probably the tweet I love most this week.

So much Swissness!

I know that guy third from the left … his hair is looking great.

So much honestyness!

During the Giro, Trek-Segafredo weren’t pulling any punches in their assessments of the day’s stages. Looks like other teams have gotten into the groove. But perhaps all that honest has made Mitchelson-Scott fall foul of the Twitter police?

So much QuickStepness!

By the hairs of his chinny-chin-chin

LouLou seems to have been taking styling tips from Bedhead Bardet – possibly not the best of ideas.

Even PhilGil needs a side hustle.

We’ve heard that 6Dnutrition is also a great recovery drink after a hard day of woodworking (not a euphemism)

So much poetryness!

So much Tourness!

Is Geraint Thomas really the hot favourite for this year’s Tour win? Really? I’m unconvinced …

Tour de Suisse is done and dusted and the Great Tour Hope of Ineos has taken the giant trophy, which has fuelled a lot of Tour predictions. They’re coming fast and furious now and we have a few here! We also have some irreverent Tour de Suisse tweets, many of which feature Peter Sagan, who surprisingly hasn’t featured in many of the recent Tweets columns. But he’s back.

Tweets of the Week : Bat Champs! Tour Hopes! Outstanding Hair!

$

It was a big weekend for racing with national championships (#BatChamps!) taking place hither and yon! Plus it’s the weekend before one of the biggest weekends in the sporting calendar. They shall be departing grandly in Belgium next Saturday. It’s all been fished out of the Twitterstream, including more Bora shower pics!

BATCHAMPS!

One of our Midge’s favourite times of year, the national championships (#batchamps) had its big weekend and here are the results.

Bora cleaned up across Europe (not unlike those shower pictures that we will come to in a minute …) with SIX batchamps in their midst now. (If only they would stop the whole ‘brotherhood is coming’ hashtag – really creepy)

Sam Bennett – party hardy, dude!

Hopefully, Bora will do the Italian champs jersey proud for Davide Formolo – and not like that vertical-striped monstrosity that Vivz wore to the Giro.

Wout‘s done well …

Meanwhile, over in France, we have young Warren Barguil takes (possibly) the most beautiful jersey of the bunch.

Ben Swift takes the British jersey

Jungels! BOB JUNGELS! gets the prize for most outstanding hair … ever!

Then this happened.

If there’s a Van in your name, you’re pretty much a shoo-in

And last but not least, a very popular win for Alex Howes – the new US national road race champion.

But stop a second and think about what the jersey might look like …

Getting ready for green

But one guy who didn’t get a batchamps jersey was Peter Sagan (his brother will be wearing that instead). He has had a good run, though – 8 continuous years of not wearing just a regular, standard-issue team jersey.

But how will we recognise him in the peloton?? After reading about the Bora batchamps, looks like Fidel has it just about right!

Peter just scrubbing up for the grand depart …

This is just downright disturbing – but could we imagine anything less from Daniel Oss?

One thing that I really like about Peter is that he makes himself available to his fans, especially the kids.

Getting ready for yellow (possibly)

With Froome and Dumoulin out of the Tour this year, it feels wide open – and we’re hoping that the GC will be hard fought, right up to the end of the penultimate stage. Will Ineos dominate this year? I’m not so sure …

Jakob Fuglsang is on fire – with a strong team to look after him, who knows what the road will bring for him!

This could be interesting …

While everyone gets ready for hard work

There are some new jersey suggestions. Suggestions we think are fabulous .

And then there’s those who won’t be in France

This one hurts. I love PhilGil and he would have been such a great road captain for the team.

The Gruppetto

Oh Lord …

I want I want!

I think perhaps Chad Haga is looking to be named bat champ …

And speaking of #batchamps

Tour Tweets of the Week : This Tour has buckled its swash and it is BUZZING!

$

There’s nothing like a grand tour to bring the tweeters out in force. And the Tour *really* brings them out. So it’s a bumper crop of tweets from the weekend in Brussels! We have Jumbo Bees, LouLou in yellow, Bora livin’ large, Fuglsang medical report, The Curious Case of Mark Cavendish, GVA with the pox, French corner and much much more. It’s a GIGANTIC edition of TOUR TWEETS OF THE WEEEEEEEEEEK

The first yellow

The yellow and black of the JumboBees got a bit more yellow after the photofinish of stage 1 and the perfect hive mind of the team time trial. It’s a great result for a team that has been getting stronger and stronger over the past few years.

And Teunissen has kept the jersey for another day

There will be blood

And by stage 3, he was feeling better and better.

But maybe not THAT much better

The third yellow

Pretty much every cliche and pun under the sun in that thar tweet

You all know how I *love* Julian Alaphilippe. And you know how much I *love* it when riders get overcome with emotion when one of their dreams comes true. This bit of film – both at the same time!!!!!!

Where was I when this spectacular stage was won by the swashbuckler? I was on a conference call … that I don’t think I said more than two words on. While LouLou was winning! I need to find a career where I can just take grand tours off altogether. All three of them. Every year.

#GiveItBack

Sometimes, you really have to wonder about people – why would you steal from a charity? The yellow Qhubeka bike that was on display in Brussels was stolen. It was supposed to be auctioned off at the end of the Tour, along with three other bikes, in order to raise money for providing bikes for children in South Africa. Let’s hope it is found and it is able to fulfil its purpose in Paris.

Going slightly off subject, but this is why it was so lovely that Stephan Rossetto got most combative for stage 1

Anything for the pox!

Looks like the scene of an old-fashioned revival

I think we’re going to have to watch this pox jersey-bib combo quite closely as we go along.

See! What did I just say about keeping an eye on this??? Let’s hope it’s only for the TTT

Nice touch with the flowers

But there was a danger man for the mountains on stage 3

Tim Wellens took the pox from GVA on Monday stage … and then Thomas De Gendt took it from him during the dinner break.

The curious case of Cavendish

Was he in form? Was he not? Who made the decision to take him? Who overruled them? Lots of questions but only one thing so far has been established. Mark Cavendish was not selected to the Dimension Data Tour team. Lots of people talking about it – no one seems to have the same story. But it really isn’t the way you want to treat one of the sprinting legends of cycling – even if you weren’t going to take him, the team announcement should have paid tribute to him.

The person who came out of this the best? Mark Cavendish himself. Pure class.

Cav also paid tribute to his lead-out man, Mark Renshaw, who announced he would be retiring at the end of this season.

French corner

Ag2r didn’t do as well as FDJ in the TTT – not by a long shot. But this shot is really nice.

Bora livin’ large

Sagan acts quite nonchalant about winning, racing, the Tour, but he really wanted that first yellow jersey. I’d like more of the passionate response and less of the ‘who cares’ shrug that he sometimes gives.

What you can never accuse Sagan of, however, is being nonchalant with his young fans.

Tour Tweets of the Week : Sacre bleu! Cor blimey! Holy cow!

$

Has this first week of the Tour de France been one of the most exciting in soooo many years, or what? Yellow jerseys won and lost; one day on top of the world, the next in the wrong echelon; the Tour keeps surprising us day after day.

Vive la France

On the eve of Bastille Day, no one should have been surprised that Julian Alaphilippe made a play to win back the yellow from the young shoulders of Giulio Ciccone. But we didn’t expect he would take another Frenchman with him on his run-in to the finish line. It was LouLou and Pinot … a dynamic duo for a day.

Pinot had a plan: “I had been preparing for his attack since last night. I was lucky enough to have good legs to follow him. These steps are hard, everyone clings to the limit. I’m in great shape, there are still 2 weeks left, I’m slowly moving forward.”

From yellow to gelato

The Wonderful World of Thomas De Gendt

It’s rare that the stage winner also gets named Most Combative … but then, Thomas De Gendt tends to do those rare things …

This might be a surprise … but it makes perfect sense, really, doesn’t it?

La Planche …

It was the first mountain-top finish of the Tour on Stage 6 and it was going to be a rip-roarer. Once they hit the slopes of La Planche des Belles Filles, it was every man for himself.

Ah, the Movistar riddle

There is nothing not to love about Andre Greipel

Wout Wout!!!

Is it just me that reads the above subhead in the voice of Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster? Anyway, Wout van Aert’s first grand tour … and he wins the sprint on Monday. By the tiniest margin against Elia Viviani. This kid ain’t just hype …

I love these kind of tweets

When the vans were pups

When the Tour turns her face away …

For all the riding together that Alaphilippe and Pinot did on Saturday, they were definitely in different races on Monday’s stage. Alaphilippe and his QuickSteppers made sure they got into the front group when the echelons went crazy, leaving Pinot (among others) to play catch-up. But he lost time hand over fist …

Meanwhile, Astana and their star rider Jakob Fuglsang had a ‘mare of a day as well.

Monday’s stage and it wasn’t the echelons that scuppered Mikel Landa‘s chances on the day. It was Warren Barguil

“I’m sad about Mikel Landa’s fall. Unbalanced when I hit Julian’s wheel, I touch Mikel who was going up to my left. It went very fast, it was not voluntary. I miraculously avoided the fall which mikel did not. I hope he’s okay.”

Richie being honest

There was one Frenchman who Lady Luck did not smile on in the run-up to Bastille Day. Poor Bedhead – the dropped chain on the finish line of La Planche was one humiliation he really didn’t need.

Below: “I have rarely ridden so fast on such tough roads, I’ve been exhausted, it’s been a difficult day, and I’m grateful to Arkéa-Samsic’s buddies for keeping me well-placed. and refuel. “

It might not have been instant, but karma might have got Tejay in the end …

Lucky that no one was hurt in this crash, but wow, there were some amazing photographs.

What the hell is wrong with the pox?

Spot the difference …

Tour Tweets of the Week : Hot damn! This Tour is roarin’!

The first week of the 2019 Tour de France was exciting – so many different winners, a swashbuckle or two. And the riders upped their game when the road started to rise in earnest. It was ALL HAPPENING in week 2! Stompin’, cryin’, screamin’, flirtin’, grittin’ … plus corralin’ cows and releasin’ goats. Yeah baby, it’s TOUR TWEETS OF THE WEEK!

Stompin’ on those pedals

With his legs raging, Thibaut Pinot put in the performance of a lifetime this past weekend. He was on fire!

He took a brilliant stage win on the Tourmalet. And then almost did it again the next day on Prat d’Albis. He might have come in second on the stage, but he certainly won the day, putting his rivals to the sword, jumping from 6th in the GC to 4th and giving the French even more to dream on!

What a lovely photograph

What Stage 15 looked like from the bike …

Screamin’ like a banshee

I wish Marc Madiot would come out of his shell a little more. He’s such a wallflower!

Cryin’ in the car

Lest we forget, Simon Yates won that astonishing stage on Sunday. And the tears flowed in the Mitchelton-Scott car.

Flirtin’ with our hearts

Coming off a magnificent stage on the Tourmalet where Julian Alaphilippe took second (and seconds out of his rivals), the French press were beside themselves with excitement (as were we).

When they were pups …

Grittin’ those teeth

The maillot jaune changes a rider. ‘It’s difficult not to follow your instinct.’ ‘Yes.’ One thing I don’t want from this Tour de France, however, is Alaphilippe dampening down his joie de vivre and his wonderful all-or-nothing riding …

The loneliness of the maillot jaune

Lovin’ your roomie

It’s the bromance of the Tour (we have to have one!) – Wellens & De Gendt, following in the footsteps of former Tour bromances of LouLou & Jungels, as well as the Bling/WaWa love story. And of course the original bromance Cav & Bernie

Corralin’ them cows

Fans made sure that livestock did not take riders out on the climb of the Tourmalet.

Rippin’ that ear piece out …

Team tactics were all over the mountains this weekend too … and not in a good way. There were some strange decisions (or no decision at all, in some cases) as some teams seemed to forget the objective. Geraint, if you want to win the Tour, give chase.

Of course, Ineos’s team miscommunications wouldn’t even get a look in on the Movistar bus – the team that bewildered the most people ALL WEEKEND

And after all that work on the Tourmalet stage (that was for nought), Andrey Amador got to spend a little time with his family

Bedhead, we know, we know!

The Gruppetto

And all the other fabulous tweets, ordered quite randomly

I love this so much. Jens Debusschere might not be anywhere near a podium, but he gave it everything to stay in the Tour another day.

Lordy …

With the green jersey all but wrapped up, looks like Peter Sagan is enjoying his time in the mountains.

Oooooh, saucy

Looks like there’s a lot of guys who are being freed to ride their own way.

There’s nothing new under the sun, boys and girls. Nothing. Robbie got there first …

And speaking of Robbie McEwen – oh how I LONG for him to be on the commentary here in the Veloshire

There’s a loyalty and a work ethic that is beautiful to see in the guys who take care of the riders …

There were laughs, there were tears, there was cheering, there were kisses. It was the last week of the 2019 Tour de France and it had everything you could possibly want. And we’ve got a very poignant, tear-jerking Twitter clips of Egan Bernal, Julian Alaphilippe, Thibaut Pinot, plus loads of wonderful memories. Thank you to everyone who has made this year’s Tour Tweets of the Week so much fun to put together!

Do you remember when Pierre Rolland went full pox a few years ago? Let me remind you …

At first, we thought that we dodged the full pox when Romain Bardet took the jersey.

But oh, how wrong we were …

Colombian pride

We had the first Ecuadorian grand tour winner with Richard Carapaz in the Giro. And Egan Bernal has become the first Colombian to win the Tour de France. And when he first donned the maillot jaune on Friday evening, it all got too much for him.

The scenes of him hugging and kissing his family after he crossed the finish line on the Champs were incredibly emotional. And it was even more emotional when we found out what Rigoberto Uran did for the Bernal family.

Bernal’s hometown made quite a noise when he sealed the deal on Val Thorens.

This is just wonderful.

LouLou, we love you!

Julian Alaphilippe surpassed everyone’s expectations – including his own. But do we really want him to have to tame his instinctive, swashbuckling riding, by focusing on a grand tour win? Personally, I wouldn’t. I want to see him cutting a swathe through races all year round – and winning a good many of them.

A wallchart to savour

Acrobatic lions

Edward Pickering was right – LouLou was on the podium in Paris by winning the Super Combatif Award

I really hope you all can see this film of Alaphilippe going over to hug his father after his presentation. (Italian Eurosport so not sure if it works in N America …)

There were some fantastic films that came out of the Tour this year. These are just a few with our favourite swashbuckler as the subject.

Pinot’s tears

We’ll make wine from your tears one day, Thibaut, when you win the Tour.

One of the saddest, most poignant, most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. It shows such love and understanding from Marc Madiot. Everyone should have someone like this …

The final grand tour of the season is often the spiciest! Both on the road and in the twitterstream …

What’s been goin’ on

First red went to Astana’s Miguel Angel Lopez – one of the favourites for the overall title – when his team won a crash-marred TTT.

Then the red went to Nicolas Roche thanks to some very bad tactics from Astana on stage 2. The stage was so bizarre, Nairo Quintana attacked and won on the flat!

But yes, look, NIco‘s here! He’s visible!

One word: YIKES!

One word: GORGEOUS

Meanwhile, some famous faces

From our lips to God’s ear …

Primoz Roglic might not consider himself a favourite for the win, but the JumboBees have a super strong team around him. That said, water on the TTT course caused the JumboBees to crash hard, leaving Roglic to start Stage 2 40sec behind. But the team he has around him is stong, so hopefully his Vuelta hasn’t ended before it started.

No excuses now, Nairo – and so far he’s delivered …

Although the real prize for Movistar is the team prize

In the Bora corner, it’s all about Sammy B.

Of course, the hardest hardman in the peloton, Thomas De Gendt, has started his third grand tour this year.

And only the mighty TDG would consider a gruelling grand tour ‘a holiday’!

Where’s Kenny???

First Kenny Elissonde was on the team, hell, he was even on the little announcement film!, but then, once he landed in Spain on Thursday … two days after this tweet was posted … he was told that he wasn’t riding the Vuelta this year so adios.

However, Ineos didn’t get off to a good start. Instant karma?

Kenny, we hope your new team in 2020 will let you ride something …

We’re just into our second week of Vuelta 2019 – so why not have a look at the crazy first week. We had mudbaths and unfeasibly large bikes; new guys winning, conti teams in red; plus our favourite dysfunctional family, Movistar. It’s Vuelta TWEETS OF THE WEEK !

Wildcards go wild!

The Vuelta always throws up something unexpected – this edition, it’s the wildcards that are getting all the attention. And rightly so!

I have to say, he’s right about this

When you wake up from a mid-stage nap and it’s all about Cofidis

Meanwhile, next year …

Some of the young’uns

You can use Pogacar’s name like a mantra …

Movistar – cycling’s favourite dysfunctional family!

‘You’re on a great ride! You could win the stage! … Oh, hold on. Wait for Nairo, wait for Nairo!’

The obligatory apology …

The cat’s been out of the bag for some time but it’s now confirmed … Quintana to Arkea Samsic

Some mighty big ambitions here …

A giant bike

We love Esteban Chaves – and we love his healthy perspective on racing.

Mudbath

The apocalyptic weather on Sunday’s stage meant that we didn’t see the gravel section of the stage. But we did find some footage.

The Gruppetto

Not often you hear the leader’s jersey described as a consolation prize. But Jasper kept it for good in the Tour of Germany.

Uncanny

Quite the poet, is Barbie …

Vuelta Tweets of the Week : Flags and fans and fanciful things

We’re looking back on the second week of racing in the Vuelta 2019 with a quick trawl through the Twitterstream. We have Philippe Gilbert‘s Flanders-style win, Jakob Fuglsang‘s first GT victory, young’uns Tadej Pogacar and Sepp Kuss, ideas for our new mystery series starring Tosh Van Der Sande (PI), and baby animals hitching a ride with Thibaut Pinot.

Flanders for a day

It was the day for one of the sport’s legends. And with fans and flags reminiscent of a Sunday in Flanders, who could possibly deny Philippe Gilbert his 10th grand tour stage win? No one. That’s who.

And, much like Flanders, it starts very young for cycling fans in the Basque country

‘We can talk, maybe, after the Worlds’ … sounds like PhilGil is looking for another stint in the rainbows. I wouldn’t put it past him!

It’s Cava-time!

A palmares most riders would give their eye-teeth for and few have surpassed

And then there’s Pogacar

And another young’un … Sep Kuss

Looks like Jumbo-Visma is now the team that develops the next generation of American riders

In the much-anticipated mystery series starring Tosh Van Der Sande (PI), Dolph Kuss will be the criminal mastermind who thinks best on skis – Van Der Sande’s greatest nemesis! Where’s my IrnBru, I’m ready to write!!!!!

Guerreiro says he can be happy with his result, but his face and his eyes don’t say that. When you get thisclose to winning …

But then there was this as well … they were riding together, Guerreiro got second, GH got third. Seems Tao didn’t like that but we’re not sure why and apparently neither does Guerreiro.

And this bird can sing

It was a popular win on Stage 16 – Jakob Fuglsang *finally* wins an individual stage in a grand tour. May it be the first of many!

The Gruppetto

That Boy Knox

The kid has a way with words

Love this!

… and this

The Rookie Jersey – only up for grabs for those riders who are making their debut in a Grand Tour.

Grandpa’s not done yet

Always room in Tweets for Alex Dowsett

A six-way bike throw

Strange sporting injuries

What is it with Bora riders and their hair? Peter Sagan, Daniel Oss and The Flying Mullet himself, Shane Archbold

Peter Sagan’s hair seen recently

‘So you just need to attack. Attack attack attack. Dance on the pedals’

One of the most endearing interviews ever. “I have already traveled 30 kilometers with kittens in my cycling jersey!” Kittens! In Pinot’s jersey! As he rides to find them an affectionate home! My heart is on fire!!!

Step back to leap higher … we can’t wait to see Thibaut – kittens or no kittens – next season

Vuelta Tweets of the Week : Trash talk, bromance and farewell for another year

$

0

The final week of the Vuelta was crazier than a crazy thing from Crazy Town. But that makes for a particularly good Tweets of the Week. We have it all – just like Bogie and Bacall … or should I say Knox and Gilbert, the bromance of the Vuelta. We also have attackers, some serious trash talk, winners, podiums …

It was one for all and all for Knox

It was a bromance to warm the cockles of anyone’s heart. PhilGil looking after young James Knox, who had his share of knocks in the previous stage and was riding just to make it to the finish on time. Nothing fancier than that.

But before PhilGil went into mentor mode on Stage 19, he won his second stage in this year’s Vuelta on Stage 17 – the fastest stage ever ridden. Anywhere. In history.

But QuickStep weren’t finished just yet. They only went and won the final stage in Madrid with Fabio Jakobsen, proving that they’re ready for a team with Elia Viviani in 2020.

Remi Cavagna is going to have to practice opening the cava without turning it into a fountain. I suspect there will be many more of these celebrations – remember, twist the bottle, not the cork.

Winners celebrating winning

It was that young’un Tadej Pogacar who lit up the final mountain stage. A worthy rider to be on the final podium.

Is it just me or does this look like Primoz Roglic has never, in his life, opened a bottle of bubbly? He’s handling it like it’s a poisonous snake!

Geoffrey Bouchard might have been the second Ag2r rider to win a grand tour KOM jersey – but the team certainly hasn’t learned that the all-pox all-the-time kit is just … well …

The all important team classification. This is a title that Movistar has won in each grand tour this summer. A record.

Trash Talk

Miguel Angel Lopez was pretty pissed off about Movistar taking the opportunity of his and Roglic’s crash to go full gas. (When even Sean Kelly says that that particular Movistar tactic wasn’t a good idea, you know you’re well in the wrong.)

Translation of tweet below: “Movistar’s actions are the same stupid people who take advantage of these things to take advantage. They always have the same excuse, the same fools that attack.” Miguel Angel Lopéz

Translation: “Let’s see if they win a day by attacking a front-facing race. It was disrespectful with the red jersey, it’s not the first time.”

But then they made their peace … or did they?

Having codified rules about such tactics isn’t really going to work. But the peloton does have a way of meting out their own form of justice.

Coming attractions

The Gruppetto

Our crush on Orla has just grown and grown throughout the summer. Where will we be without her?

Thomas De Gendt hangs up his wheels for the season – after riding all three grand tours.

And it’s farewell to Mark Renshaw, as he rides off into the sunset. But not before one of his children gives him a bidon in his last race. And then gets all shy with the hugs

Tweets of the Week: Rainbows and tears at the Worlds

$

The Worlds was a ride through hell to the rainbows as the men did in Sunday’s road race – if hell were dictated by rainfall. It was full of controversy, some amazing rides and we’ve got a lot of youngsters coming into their own. And they’re only going to get better and better as the years go by. Pull on your sou’wester and jump into the Twitterstream!

It’s a Mads world

And he’s thrown down the gauntlet for the next year at least

And a little advice on what makes for a good life

We’re going to hold you to your promise, Matt. *No white shorts!*

Trek means business, stocking up the team with the cream of a young crop

When Mads was a pup

A big day for Danes

In cycling, the individual wins, but it’s an effort that has been shared by many.

Ahem, he was not the first Danish world champion … only the first male Danish world champion

It’s either genius or downright crazy …

How the race was won – in the most astonishing way

For Annemiek van Vleuten it was definitely genius! Taking off with over 100km to race … and staying out the whole time.

A little DQ humour from the fans, of course!

How did everyone else fare?

It was a grim, grim day for the men on Sunday. Torrential rain pretty much all day and even with a whole section of the course shaved off because of mud, rain, danger, it still must have felt like 1000km …

When MDVP took off out of a drenched peloton as the race got to the business end, everyone thought they’d seen the winning move. But, you know what, it’s almost never that simple …

It can happen to anyone … the legs just can’t take any more.

Certainly, the lack of pictures for a lot of the race, due to rain, set the commentators scrambling

Abandonments abounded

oh dear …

Those white jerseys didn’t fare very well in the pouring rain. But we love them!

Quite simply, the stuff of nightmares …

In possibly the least surprising news of the week

And I really don’t know what this is all about …

During the time trials, Primoz Roglic (who wasn’t going to win the title) sprinted to the finish with Rohan Dennis (who took the title).

THE most surprising tweet EVER

The riders might have been soaked and abandoning with …well, abandon, but the fans still had heart (must have been the wet weather gear).

Meanwhile, on Monday, Yorkshire took to trolling cycling fans everywhere

When heartbreak rules the day

You win some, you lose some … sometimes the same thing within an hour. Whatever you might think of the UCI’s ruling on Nils Eekhoff’s DQ, you have to feel for the guy when you see a picture like this

And if that didn’t make you cry, try to get through this without getting something in your eye and the possibility of a cold because, well, your nose is running …

From young’uns who have the chance to do it all again another year, this is what it’s like when you think it is probably the last chance you have to regain the rainbow …

But blossoming in the rain was a new, fine bromance

But damn, that Philippe Gilbert is just *such* a legend.

Bikes change lives

They really do, and we have three great examples

The Gruppetto

Mistaken identity at its most disturbing

Oh God no … (although to be fair, his hard work on the front of the peloton probably won’t be constantly in vain).

Tweets of the Week: The final Monument, farewells and seasonal stats

The season is winding down rather quickly now. It was Il Lombardia weekend, the last Monument of the season (and the most scenic). But the tweets were falling like autumn leaves …

A fine autumnal Trek

There’s a chill in the air – and Trek come into their own with a Monument win for Bauke Mollema.

There’s a lot of love in that look

Mopping up the Monument tweets

Pierre Latour revved up the end of the race with constant attacks

#FreeLanda has finally been accomplished … until next year when he isn’t happy at Bahrain-Merida. It’ll be an evergreen hashtag

Would have loved PhilGil to win Il Lombardia but that was not to be.

Hanging up their wheels

It’s farewell to Laurens Ten Dam

And Lars Bak

And Steve Morabito

And Simon Spilak

And Russell Downing

And Maxime Monfort

With no word of a new signing after he parted ways with Arkea, I wonder if this is goodbye to Andre Greipel

And a very special VeloVoices favourite, Ruben Plaza – whose name looms large in the Tosh Van Der Sande Detective series

It’s also a sad goodbye to pro-conti team Roompot Charles which has had to fold.

Counting up the season

The Gruppetto

Jelle Wallays takes the win for Paris Tours.

What does next season have in store?

This is good news. Very good news.

If you can imagine it, it can happen. Giulio Ciccone doing some real visualisation

Tweets of the Week : That Boy Phinney, Classics legends, and Danish orientation

$
0
0

Coming to the end of the season, the Twitterstream runs a little slower. Until news such as Taylor Phinney retiring comes through. Then it starts moving fast again. We also have a couple of Classics legends, the Tour de France 2020 course and a lovely wedding picture of Mr and Mrs Michal Kwiatkowski

That Boy Phinney

It probably didn’t come as much of a surprise to cycling fans, but Taylor Phinney announced his retirement last week. He was a rider who burned brightly early on, both in the peloton and with the fans, but then he suffered that horrific crash in the US national championships in 2014. It took him over a year to go through rehabilitation and come back to the peloton, but he never has been the same rider since. It truly was a life-changing event – for him physically but also mentally, as a big part of his recovery was through creating art.

While a lot of the commentary around his retirement made it sound like he had passed away (Cycling Weekly and VeloNews, I’m looking at you!), there were plenty of people who shared some of their favourite Phinney moments.

That Boy Phinney featured in many Tweets of the Week before the 2014 crash, but none of them got as much reaction as our Special Tweets of the Week when he came back to the peloton. It’s been one of our most popular posts ever.

I love this picture – but I have no idea what ‘cutting your town template’ means

Personally, I think this is my favourite tweet about Taylor

LGBT D?

This gives Velo love a new definition

Tour de France 2020 route

It might be a real spectacle but what we really want to know is this: is it a LouLou of a parcours?

No Alpe, no Galibier, no Tourmalet … but a cracker of a Colombier stage.

We’re so hoping Thibaut Pinot gets his mojo back for the 2020 TdF – we need some magnficient pedal-stomping!

Already the speculation : who will be Ineos leader? Who will be the super domestique? And already there are conflicting answers

Um, Chris, you might want to have a look at what Egan said here …

The making of a Classics man

If you’re not ready to retire, you need to figure out a new way to win.

Meanwhile, here are a couple of Classics legends. Two who have already retired …

… and one who just keeps on going (and winning)

The Gruppetto

Michal Kwiatkowski might not have had a particularly sterling season but no doubt this makes up for it. Congratulations to the couple and may they have a long and happy life together.

It only takes a fist bump

This concept strikes fear in my heart. You could never unsee that …

Oh, the olden days …

Didn’t Albert Einstein say that riding his bike helped him think? Bikes win Nobel Prizes!

Interesting stats …

This is going to run and run

Tweets of the Week 2020: BatChamps, season’s dreaming and bye-bye Bernie

$

0

The season is about to start with the Tour Down Under but first there was the Australian #BatChamps as well as some CX action. We also check in with some riders as to how they are preparing for the 2020 season. And Boonen in a bath of beans! plus BREAKING NEWS …

>stop press< Bernie says goodbye!

One of the most popular riders in the peloton and the #LadiesFavourite, Bernie Eisel, is hanging up his wheels. The announcement was done very low key but it does mean that there will be no riding off the front on the Champs to the cheers of the crowd as a farewell.

Of course, VeloVoices will be compiling our own tribute to Bernie in the coming days so #StayAlert

>resume scheduled content< Early #BatChamps

Absolutely love it when riders are anything but nonchalant at the finish line, when they don’t consider it just another day in the office.

I can’t say I ever thought about the Aussie parcours but Fabrizio has a very good point.

Meanwhile, over to the Dutch CX championships

The only surprise would be if someone were surprised by this result. MvdP continues his domination of, well, everything

He might have some stiff competition, however, once these birds get race fit.

Planning for a dream come true

Dreams need actions to come true – so who is dreaming of what this year?

Remco Evenepoel is Italy-bound for his first Grand Tour.

I bet Evenepoel isn’t the only QuickStepper who is going to feel the absence of PhilGil this season.

Jungels!! BOB JUNGELS!!! would make the season just that much more fun for me if he got his mojo back.

With Tom Dumoulin leaving Sunweb for Jumbo-Visma, it’ll be all eyes on Tiesj Benoot in his first Sunweb season. A VeloVoices favourite, it says on his team profile that his favourite race is Ronde van Vlaanderen. If the forecast is for rain this year, I’m going to #BetOnBenoot

Last season’s victories haven’t dulled Annemiek van Vleuten‘s appetite to put in the hard work so she can pick up where she left off …

If it’s January, it’s the usual ‘Richie Porte targetting TDU’ tweets. And the ‘never felt better’, ‘targeting the big races’, etc etc. Like clockwork. It’ll be interesting to see how he gets on once new teammate His Nibs gets racing this season. And of course last year’s Trek Sensation™ Giulio Ciccone who looks poised for superstardom.

Of course, Trek also has the World Champion, who not only is a great rider, but a very good son.

PhilGil looks like he’s definitely up for another season – the evergreen rider.

Vivz has a pretty fabulous-looking race schedule this season. How many times will we see that beautiful European Champs jersey cross the line first?

Vital Concept and Arkea-Samsic join Total Direct Energie as the three wildcards for Tour de France 2020.

There really isn’t anything quite like being at the side of the road at some of your favourite races. I still think about standing in the Forest of Arenberg … So here’s hoping we get some of Lois’s pictures so we can live vicariously!

If I could turn back time …

I just loved these photographs! (What with digital photos the norma now, will future generations have the joy of finding a treasure trove of old photographs?)

The Gruppetto

Stretch and bend and snap

I’ll just leave this here …

Really looking forward to Orla and team at the Grand Tours.

Mathias Norsgaard was hit by a car during training in December and the injuries to his legs sound horrific. All our hopes that his rehabilitation goes well.

One hell of a list …

‘Hello, is that the fashion police?’

Just me or does Michael Gogl look like he’s a gendarme in that kit? I wonder if I’m ever going to remember that NTT is the new name for Dimension Data (the team I kept calling Qhubeka last year …).

Tweets of the Week 2020 : And so it begins

$

The racing has started Down Under, we have full-fan Bernie tweets, we look at no booze rules, we answer the question ‘Who’s Afraid of MvdP?’, we have some racers talkin’ big and bad about the Tour already, and much much more.

Let us sing a song of Bernie Eisel

Bernie Eisel’s retirement tweet came about just before last week’s TofW was posted. So we’re full-fan Bernie this week.

Last of the Mapei team … dear God, that kit

And from perhaps Bernie’s most devoted fan. A legendary bromance

Team rules

An extract from the interview with Adam Hansen about Lotto’s new No Booze Cruise … so no more pics of Adam with a beer in his hand during an Alpe d’Huez stage then.

Lotto Soudal’s Adam Hansen says that he’s fully supportive, and “totally understanding” of his team’s newly instigated no-alcohol policy for all staff members and riders at races.

General manager John Lelangue announced the Belgian team’s decision to go dry earlier this week, saying it was “part of the way of living together”. He confirmed that riders and staff will still be able to celebrate victories, birthdays and “special events” with a glass of champagne.

Of course, the first question would be … is it sparkling grape juice tonight for the victory celebrations?

Warming up the crystal ball

A rainy Roubaix … too much to wish for?

While we wait for the rains, why not have a look at what the Mighty Tom Boonen says about Flanders

Strade Bianche is *always* one of the races of the year.

If MvdP rode for Lotto-Soudal, they’d be drinking more than not, if they’re still able to toast victories …

QuickStep have had bitter experience (Amstel Gold?) with this one. But Flanders and Roubaix are long races so we’ll see what MvdP has learned from his Worlds experience.

More Tour talk … already!

Holy Moly, has Primoz Roglic learned nothing from Simon Yates‘s Giro predictions last year … ‘my rivals should be shitting themselves with fear’. We know how *that* turned out – no soiled shorts … So Roglic already (already!!!!) announcing himself the favourite for the Tour is a touch of hubris.

Translation: “I’m the Tour favourite. The best will win. We’re all going to fight for it, and if you look at my results from the last few seasons, you’ll see that I’ve won a few races. So I see no reason not to be optimistic.”

Meanwhile, back at Brailsford Towers. His confirmation possibly before he spoke to Froome?

I mean, really! The only trident that is successful in cycling is the trophy for Tirreno Adriatico! Am I right???

We’ve even got something for the Giro

Okaaaaaaaaay

Because curiosity means you go straight to the syringes.

The Gruppetto

This is what a happy, relaxed person looks like. Marcel Kittel really does look years younger.

Peter Sagan … remember him?

The only thing I can say about snowy-white kit in the rain is: ‘My eyes! My eyes!’

Hmmmm.

Love this.

Riddle … solved

Wild cards a go-go

All the colours

I have always had a love for Andre Greipel. And WOW look at him in that kit! He looks maaaaaaaarvellous

I suspect that Mother Nature has more to do with this than the Worlds.

Tweets of the Week 2020: Bedhead snaps, Degs sector, riding with champions

$

0

Oh it was a predictable week with some pretty unpredictable aspects. We have cobbley goodness, thanks to the Mighty Degs; Bedhead’s new career; results on Willunga Hill; Lumberjacks! Dead Parrots! What are we on? FIRE, people! We are ON FIRE in this week’s TWEETS OF THE WEEK

Bedhead snaps!

You have to love Bedhead Bardet. Quiet, unassuming photographer to the stars.

Roubaix honours

Strade Bianche names a white sector for any rider who wins this beautiful race three times (so far only Fabian Cancellara has done that). And now Roubaix has named a sector of cobbles after the Mighty Degs, but for a very different (and fabulous) reason. Gotta love it!

Riding with Lance?

The latest in the long long long story of Lance Armstrong. You can spend a week riding with him and George Hincapie for the knock-down drag-out price of $30,000. It took only seconds for the counter-offers came in thick and fast!

This might be the winner

Riding with Champions!

Meanwhile, some lucky young guns got to ride with Fernando Gaviria and Max Richeze in San Juan. For free! FREE, I say! Can you imagine what it must have meant to those kids?

We do love gestures of sportsmanship in cycling – riders who are gracious whether they take the sprint or come in second.

And we love this too.

Peter Sagan might have been quiet last year (compared to other years) but he is still blazing through the hearts of fans, particularly tiny fans. Just love these two tweets so much

The Richie and Impey Show

I get excited about Tour Down Under because it means Strade Bianche, Milan SR, Spring Classics are on their way, but the race itself? Not so much. Mainly because there really aren’t any surprises. Richie Porte does well here, there’s talk of how magnificent his season will be (need I go on?). Caleb Ewan wins sprints and there’s talk about how magnificent his season will be (and sometimes that’s true). And then Darryl Impey goes into the ochre jersey and … there’s no talk about how magnificent his season will be as we never hear about it again all season and no one is even pretending that we will.

Class tweet from Trek

But hot damn – Richie did *not*, I repeat *did not*! win on Willunga Hill. Surely the sign of the end of days, right? But maybe our catastrophic and/or dystopian future is not quite upon us yet (read The Death of Grass for the horror of it all), as Richie might have lost on Willunga but own the overall TDU. On a brighter note, looks like Lukas can foresee the future!

‘in a way, they [Mitchelton Scott] lost’ … in a way? They lost. ‘no, they were resting’ ‘Resting! They lost!’. ‘No, they were stunned!’ ‘They were pining for the fjords…’

It really has been awhile

Well, somebody’s got to entertain the crowd!

The Gruppetto

Interesting

Looks like Etoile de Besseges is going to be a fabulous race this year.

Dance dance DANCE!

it’s definitely a thing now

And we have a fine jersey to go with it. Shall we all sing together? ‘Oooooooh, I’m a lumberjack and I’m okay, I sleep all night and I work all day

And while we’re in the wilderness, it’s the Dolly Parton Challenge! Mitchelton-Scott, we salute you!

All the jerseys

Our beloved Panache

Our beloved Luke

“If we’re able to solve this, we can count that as a victory and we can have a beer”

totally gorgeous …

Look who’s got his mojo back … yeah baby!
